Companies outside the run
The grey dots outside the ring are listed companies the lab has no facts for, drawn only because a company in the run is linked to them as a supplier or customer. They sit beyond their sector, as estimated from their SIC code.
Why they are there
The run covers a chosen set of companies. Their supplier links often lead to companies outside that set: a small supplier naming a big customer in the run, or a company in the run naming a customer that is not. Leaving those out would hide most of the links, so the graph draws the other company as a grey dot.
A grey dot has no facts of its own. Click it to see its supplier links and a link to its SEC filings.
Where they sit
Each sits in a cluster beyond its sector on the ring. Its sector is estimated from the SIC code the SEC holds for it, because the run's classification covers only its own companies. See SIC and GICS. When there is no estimate, it sits beyond the sector of the company it is linked to most.
When they show
They are drawn when the graph is zoomed in, when a company or sector is selected, or during a season replay. Zoomed out, their links are counted in the lines between sectors instead. See sector roll-ups.
