Management quotes
A quote is something an executive said, recorded word for word from the filing, with who said it. The lab checks that each quote appears verbatim in its passage, so the words are the company's, not a paraphrase.
What one holds
The exact words, the person who said them (usually an executive, with their role, such as chief executive or chief financial officer), and the passage they appear in. A quote can also say what it is about: a segment, product, region or company.
Verbatim, checked
Releases usually open with a comment from the chief executive. When the lab extracts a quote, it checks the words against the passage, and a quote that does not match exactly is sent back to be corrected, or dropped. What you read is what the company published.
Reading it
Quotes carry tone that numbers do not, but they are written to present the quarter well. Read them beside the drivers and risks and the reported figures.
